Featured in House & Home Magazine: A Rathgar Family Home Transformation

I'm delighted to share that one of my recent projects has been featured in House & Home Magazine.

Located in Rathgar, Dublin, this project was about much more than adding extra space to a family home. It was about creating a home that worked better for the people living in it.

The clients had a clear vision for how they wanted their home to support family life. With four children ranging in age from eight to sixteen, they needed spaces that could support family life in all its forms, somewhere to play, exercise, relax, spend time together and occasionally escape for a little quiet time too.

The brief was to design the interiors for a new two-storey extension that would feel completely connected to the existing house. At the same time, the clients were keen to embrace more colour and personality within the new spaces, creating a subtle contrast between old and new while ensuring the home felt cohesive throughout.

Designing Spaces That Feel Connected

One of the biggest challenges was creating cohesion across the new open-plan extension. The space flows from the existing kitchen into a bright playroom before stepping down into a sunken living room. While each area serves a different purpose, it was important that they felt connected both visually and practically.

Colour became the starting point for the scheme. The clients loved green, which was music to my ears, and together we layered warm tones, natural materials and bespoke details throughout the space to create a home that feels bright, welcoming and full of personality.

The Details That Make a House Feel Like Home

Bespoke joinery played a significant role throughout the project, helping to bring functionality, character and continuity to each space.

One of my favourite features is the large U-shaped sofa in the sunken living room. Designed specifically for the family, it has become the place where everyone gathers at the end of the day.

I also loved collaborating with illustrator Emily McKeagney on a bespoke mural inspired by Benbulbin in County Sligo, a place that holds special meaning for the family. Personal touches like these are often what make a home feel truly unique.

Trusting the Process

Like many renovation projects, there were challenges along the way. That’s simply part of the journey when transforming a home, and it requires patience, trust and collaboration from everyone involved.

That's why seeing the finished spaces come together was so satisfying. As an interior designer, there’s nothing more rewarding than seeing a home being lived in and enjoyed.

Knowing that each member of the family has a space that works for them, while still bringing everyone together, is what makes this project feel so special.

I'm incredibly grateful to my clients for trusting me with their home and delighted to see the project featured in House & Home Magazine.
